Studying

I know a lot of people must wonder how I study with a visual and physical impairment.  That is where software comes in. I use a scanner with read software. I can scan in pages from a textbook or actually I have someone do it for me.  The software will then read the text aloud. However, it makes Darth Vader sound like the most animated character. So, it gets pretty rough when you're listening to an animatronic voice read 3 hours of government or economics.  As far as, writing goes I usually have somebody type what I'm saying.  I also have software that is speech to text software.  I can talk into a microphone and it turns my words into text.  However, it is not always real accurate.  I have to work with the software a lot to teach it how I talk and how to recognize my words.  I am working to get it better trained so that I can use it for papers etc.  But, for now I dictate to someone and they type what I say.  All of this means I have to really plan my studying.  I cannot just wait and do it whenever I want.  I have to work around other peoples schedules as well.

  1. What about when using a device that you have to type with. Like a iphone. Do you have someone answer your calls kind of like something a secretary would do? Or are you able to do it on your own?

  3. Hey Keeona I use a bluetooth to pick up an answer phone calls. And I would hold my phone with one hand and type with long finger. If a friend is around and it's a long message that needs to be typed i'll ask my friend to. Another problem is that when I type I can't see my spelling errors, that why i sometimes have so many.

  5. I wanted to ask a question. How much do wheelchairs cost and how often do you need to get them repaired and/or buy new ones?

  6. It depends, my wheelchair is electric it has customized seating and other special functions which allow me more independence... so mines cost over $20,000. I am also kind of rough with my chair not being wild but due to having such high muscle tone fore example, I've broken the footplate like 5 times and this wheelchair is only one and a half years old. So, I have to get several repairs done. You are able to get an electric wheelchair every 5 years and a manual chair every 3 years depending on the type of seating. But, that does vary based on what type of insurance you have. You can get a manual chair more often but of course I cannot use a manual chair so that doesn’t really help me. So, I have to really try to take good care of it because, when something it broken it is like taking your legs off for a few days while it is being repaired - I have no way to get around!
